How to Choose Motorcycle Engine Oil
15 January 2026 MSCV Editorial

Engine oil is critical to motorcycle performance and longevity. Choosing the right oil means understanding types, viscosity and your motorcycle's requirements.
Motorcycle engine oils come in mineral, semi-synthetic and fully synthetic formulations. Mineral oils are economical and suited to older engines; semi-synthetics balance cost and performance; fully synthetics offer superior protection at higher temperatures.
Viscosity ratings such as 10W-40 describe flow at low (W = winter) and high temperatures. Always refer to your motorcycle manufacturer's recommendation. In Malaysia's warm climate, a common recommendation is 10W-40 or 15W-50 depending on engine type.
Change oil at the intervals specified by the manufacturer, and always replace the oil filter. Look for JASO MA2 specification for motorcycles with wet clutches.
Safety Notes
Always use the oil grade and specification recommended by your motorcycle manufacturer. Dispose of used oil responsibly.
